The Extraction of Street Curbs from Mobile Laser Scanning Data in Urban Areas

The demand for mobile laser scanning in urban areas has grown recent years. Mobile-based light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology can be used to collect high-precision digital information on city roads building façades. However, due the small size of curbs, that curb is limited. Moreover, occlusion may cause extraction method unable correctly capture area. This paper presents development an algorithm extracting street curbs from mobile-based LiDAR point cloud data support managers deformation monitoring reconstruction. proposed extracts three complex scenarios: vegetation covering curved by vehicles, pedestrians. combined both spatial geometric information, using attributes road boundary. It adapt different heights boundary structures. Analyses real study sites show rationality applicability this obtaining accurate results curb-based data. overall performance fully discussed, are shown promising. Both completeness correctness extracted left right edges greater than 98%.
